The Chashaku (Japanese for "tea scoop") is a slender, single-piece spoon, hand-carved from a stalk of bamboo, that is essential to the Japanese tea ceremony (Chanoyu) and daily matcha preparation. Unlike Western spoons, its design is long and gracefully curved, allowing it to easily reach and scoop powder from the deep, narrow natsume (matcha container) or modern matcha bags without spilling. The curved tip is meticulously shaped to hold the ideal portion of matcha; typically, two slightly heaped scoops (one scoop about 1 gram) are used for thinner tea (usucha), and three or more and less water for the thicker style (koicha). The chashaku connects the user directly to the centuries-old tradition, serving not only as a functional measuring tool but also as an object of natural, simple beauty. To maintain its integrity and prevent moisture absorption, it is traditionally cleaned by gently wiping off any residual powder with a dry cloth, never with water or soap.
