This is a high-quality Tokoname Kyusu (side-handled teapot), a handcrafted piece by fourth-generation potter Sawada Tomohiro (澤田朋大), who is known for blending contemporary style with ancient Ko-Tokoname ceramic traditions. The teapot is typically fashioned from a dark grey clay, often featuring one of Tomohiro's distinctive finishes, such as a unique metallic glaze, ash glaze, or a dramatic Yohen (kiln change) effect. Its wider, flatter profile and large lid opening are intentionally designed to allow premium tea leaves, like Sencha and Gyokuro, to fully unfurl and release a rich umami flavor. The integrated ceramic sasame filter ensures a quick and clear pour without clogging, while the side handle (yokode) allows for comfortable and elegant one-handed pouring. This piece is a superb example of the harmony between the heritage of Tokoname—one of Japan's Six Ancient Kilns—and modern functional artistry.
